What a busy and brilliant few weeks it’s been across 1st Moxby Moor Scout Group! From muddy night hikes and museum sleepovers to camp adventures, pizza-making and pancake flipping — our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have packed so much into the term already. Here’s a look at what each section has been up to and what’s coming next.
Section Update
Beavers
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Beavers — a fantastic milestone to celebrate. After Easter, when the weather improves, we’ll be marking the occasion with a special teddy bears’ picnic.
Recently, our Beavers have enjoyed pancake-making together, and we’ll be finishing the term with a much-anticipated Easter egg hunt.
Cubs
Cubs have had an especially busy few weeks. Alongside their regular meetings, they recently enjoyed a camp at Hesley Woods Scout Activity Centre, where they took part in a range of adventurous outdoor activities and developed their teamwork and independence skills.
Back at HQ, Cubs combined practical skills with community spirit during a pizza-making evening, creating everything from dough to finished dish. They also held a successful toy sale, with profits generously donated to a range of charities supporting children, adults and wildlife causes.
Looking ahead, Cubs will be focusing on environmental topics — learning about conservation, sustainability and how they can help protect nature locally. Plans also include Mother’s Day activities, a visit from the church to learn more about Lent and Easter, and outdoor skills sessions such as tent pitching in preparation for a potential camp later in the year.
Scouts
The 1st Moxby Moor Scout Troop has taken part in a range of challenging and rewarding activities recently.
In early February, Scouts tested their navigation skills on a night hike from Coxwold to Byland Abbey, using only maps, compasses and torches to guide their way. Despite strong winds, heavy mud and persistent rain, they successfully completed the 2.5-mile route, demonstrating real determination and teamwork.
During half term, the Troop travelled to Beamish Museum, where they explored the museum’s historic exhibits and enjoyed a unique overnight stay in the on-site Masonic Lodge. An early start the following morning meant they were first in line at the famous sweet shop — which proved very popular!
For the remainder of the term, Scouts will be focusing on a hands-on engineering challenge as they design, build and race their own Pinewood Derby cars.
Across all sections, these activities continue to develop confidence, resilience, practical skills and teamwork — and it’s fantastic to see our young people thriving.
