Galtres District Scouts supports young people and volunteers across communities north of York in North Yorkshire. As part of the UK Scouting movement, the district helps young people develop confidence, leadership, and practical skills through adventure, teamwork, and community involvement.
The district takes its name from the historic Forest of Galtres, a medieval royal forest that once covered a large area north of York. Although the forest itself disappeared many centuries ago, the name remains closely connected to the identity and heritage of the local area.
The Development of Scouting in the Area
Scouting began in the United Kingdom in 1907 and quickly spread across towns and villages throughout the country. Local Scout groups formed across North Yorkshire to give young people opportunities to take part in outdoor activities, learn new skills, and serve their communities.
Over time these groups were organised into districts to provide support, coordination, and shared opportunities for activities and events. Galtres District became the structure through which many local groups in the area work together, supporting volunteers and delivering the Scouting programme to young people.
Galtres District Today
Today, Galtres District Scouts brings together several active Scout groups from across the local area. These groups are run by dedicated volunteers who organise weekly meetings, camps, activities, and community events for young people aged 4 to 25.
The district currently includes the following Scout groups:
1st Moxby Moor
1st Kyle Valley
1st Easingwold
Recently, the district has also welcomed several groups from the former Ripon District. This has helped strengthen Scouting in the area and brought new communities into the Galtres District.
These groups include:
1st Topcliffe
1st Sowerby
1st Thirsk
1st Boroughbridge
By bringing these groups together under one district, Galtres Scouts continues to grow while maintaining strong local traditions and connections within each community.
Looking to the Future
Galtres District Scouts continues to provide opportunities for young people to take part in adventures, learn valuable life skills, and make lifelong friendships. From weekly meetings and local camps to district events and international experiences, the district is committed to helping young people discover their potential.
With the support of volunteers, leaders, and the wider community, Galtres District Scouts will continue to grow and evolve while staying true to the values and spirit of Scouting.
